Menopause treatments at The Heeler Centre, Sussex

The menopause body: How our therapies can support you through change

Menopause is a natural stage of life, but that does not mean it always feels straightforward. Hormonal changes can affect the body in many ways, physically, mentally and emotionally. Even when women expect certain symptoms, others can appear unexpectedly and disrupt sleep, comfort, movement and confidence.

At The Heeler Centre in Hassocks, we support many women navigating perimenopause and menopause. Using a combination of physiotherapy, massage, osteopathy, acupuncture, homeopathy, talking therapy and lifestyle support, we help women feel more comfortable, informed and supported throughout this transition.

You do not have to simply "put up with it." With the right help, your body can adapt more smoothly.

Common physical symptoms of menopause

As hormone levels shift, many women experience:

  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Muscle tension or fatigue
  • Sleep disruption and night sweats
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Dizziness
  • Brain fog or reduced concentration
  • Mood changes, anxiety or emotional sensitivity
  • Changes in posture or reduced flexibility
  • Hearing changes

While symptoms are highly individual, one that often gets overlooked, yet affects many, is frozen shoulder.

Frozen shoulder and menopause: The missing link

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is surprisingly common during menopause and perimenopause due to hormonal influence on connective tissue and inflammation pathways. Symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty raising or rotating the arm
  • Pain lying on one side at night
  • Gradual loss of shoulder movement
  • A deep, achy, sometimes sharp pain
  • Stiffness lasting months or longer

Without treatment, frozen shoulder can take 12 to 24 months to resolve naturally. With the right support, recovery can be faster and far more comfortable.

Why hormones affect muscles and joints

Oestrogen plays a role in collagen production, joint lubrication, soft tissue flexibility and nervous system regulation. When levels fall, the body may feel stiffer, slower to recover from activity or more reactive to stress and inflammation. This can make movement and daily life feel harder.

How our therapies can help

A personalised approach can help manage both symptoms and their underlying patterns. At The Heeler Centre, options may include:

Osteopathy Helps improve joint movement and alignment. This is particularly useful for frozen shoulder, posture changes, joint stiffness, headaches and dizziness.

Physiotherapy Supports safe strengthening, mobility, pelvic health and rehabilitation for conditions like frozen shoulder or hip discomfort.

Massage Therapy Helps release muscle tension, improve circulation, ease aches and support better sleep.

Acupuncture May help with hot flushes, anxiety, headaches, menopause related insomnia and shoulder pain.

Homeopathy A gentle, tailored approach that may help support emotional balance, sleep and overall wellbeing during hormonal change.

Reflexology Helps calm the nervous system, improve circulation and support hormonal balance. Many women find it grounding and restorative.

Talking Therapy Provides space to process changes, identity shifts, mood changes and emotional load during menopause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the therapists at The Heeler Centre doctors?

No, our practitioners are not medical doctors. The Heeler Centre is a centre of excellence for alternative therapies and healing. While we are highly experienced and clinically credible, our care is intended to complement, not replace, traditional medical advice. We always recommend consulting your GP for any primary medical concerns.

Can alternative therapies help with hot flushes?

Many women find that acupuncture and homeopathy provide relief from the intensity and frequency of hot flushes by supporting the body's natural balance.  If there is a particular therapy you are keen on, call the reception team and they can arrange a call back with a therapist for a brief chat.

Is frozen shoulder always caused by menopause?

Not always, but there is a strong hormonal link for women in their 40s and 50s. Our osteopaths and physiotherapists can help identify the root cause of your shoulder pain and provide a clear treatment plan.

What happens if you think I need medical HRT?

We are not GPs. It’s always worth a conversation with your GP and we would suggest asking for a women’s health doctor who has an interest in menopause.
