Could your posture be contributing to pain?
Posture has become a hot topic in recent years, and for good reason.
Whether you work at a desk, spend time on your phone, drive long distances or juggle parenting and daily life, your body is constantly adapting to the positions you spend time in.
But posture is not simply about standing up straight. In fact, there is no single “perfect” posture. What often matters more is how long you stay in one position, how much you move throughout the day and how your body copes with those demands.
At The Heeler Centre in Hassocks, we regularly see people experiencing neck pain, shoulder tension, lower back discomfort, stiffness and headaches where work, lifestyle or movement habits may be contributing.
Why can posture cause discomfort?
Your muscles and joints work together to support you as you sit, stand and move.
Spending long periods in the same position can leave some areas feeling tight, tired or stiff. You might notice:
- Neck or shoulder tension
- Lower back discomfort
- Tight hips
- Headaches
- Jaw tension
- Stiffness after sitting
- Reduced mobility or flexibility
It is rarely caused by one thing. Long periods sitting, laptop use, driving, carrying children or bags, stress, reduced activity and repetitive movements can all play a part.
Sometimes the simplest change is also one of the most helpful: move and change position more often.
How can treatment help?
If pain or stiffness is becoming a regular part of your day, a therapist can assess how you move, where you are experiencing discomfort and whether strength, mobility or everyday habits may be contributing.
At The Heeler Centre, several therapies can help depending on your symptoms.
Osteopathy can help improve joint mobility, ease muscular tension and provide advice around movement and lifestyle.
Chiropractic can help assess joint and muscle function, improve mobility and support people experiencing back, neck or postural discomfort.
Physiotherapy combines assessment, exercise, movement and rehabilitation to help improve strength, mobility and function.
Massage Therapy can help ease muscular tension, support flexibility and encourage relaxation.
Acupuncture may also be suitable for some types of pain and muscular tension.
Your therapist will recommend an approach based on your individual symptoms rather than simply telling you to “sit up straight”.
Small changes can make a difference
Looking after your posture does not mean holding yourself rigidly upright all day.
Simple changes can include:
- Adjusting your desk and screen position
- Taking regular movement breaks
- Changing position throughout the day
- Building strength gradually
- Improving mobility
- Being aware of tension caused by stress
If you work at a desk, even getting up regularly, walking while taking a phone call or changing the way you are sitting can help.
The aim is not perfect posture. It is comfortable, varied movement.
