Finding a work out that feels substantial when you have bad knees can be frustrating. Running puts a vast amount of pressure on the knee joint, yet is considered one of the best cardio vascular exercises. So, what alternatives are there to get our blood pumping?
Although considered a low impact form of exercise, swimming can burn many calories. Most stokes work the major muscle groups in the body, burning fat and toning the body.
Rowing is considered a total body workout, without putting unnecessary pressure on your knees. Your core strength is also tested whilst rowing. If you find rowing easy, increase the resistance to a manageable level for maximum effect.
Cycling is great for burning fat and increasing your body’s flexibility. Whether you prefer to cycle at the gym or on the open roads, you will endure a great workout! A lower resistance will put less pressure on your knees.
Using an aerobic step can also be useful when looking for a cardio workout. Place your left foot onto the step, then tap the step with your right, continuing to do this at your own pace. Keep your knees directly about your ankles to reduce the pressure.
